The Place Vendome was originally named the "Place des Conquetes" and the statue of Louis XIV was placed in the middle of the square. After was called the “Place Louis-le-Grand”, and it became the “Place des Piques” during the French Revolution. Its current name comes from the Hotel Vendome that was destroyed in order to build the square. The column in the middle of the Place Vendome is 43.5 meters height and is made of 1220 Austrian and Russian cannons captured by Napoleon's Army in 1805 when his military campaign terminated in the battle of Austerlitz. A statue of Napoleon as Caesar is placed at the bronze column. These 17th century buildings hold some of the most expensive hotels and shops in Paris. The place is famous for its jewelry stores and also famous watchmakers such as Cartier, Fred, a Rolex dealer can be found there. Finally in The Place Vendome is the well known Ritz Hotel where Princess Diana dined just before leaving on her last trip by car. |
