This monumental style opera house was constructed in times of Napoleon III, by Charles Garnier. Opera Garnier is known as or Palais Garnier or as the Paris Opera. Opera Garnier was the world's largest theatre and opera house when it opened in 1875. During the construction of the opera building an underground lake was discovered. The small lake still exists under the Opera Garnier building. It was the hiding place of the "Phantom of the Opera" in famous play written by Paul Leroux.

The Phantom of the Opera of fiction lived beneath this Opera Garnier house. At night, when the windows of the opera house are lit, it’s not that difficult to imagine Claude Rains or Vincent Price really living underneath the building and playing Bach on a pipe organ all night long.

The building sits in one of the most chic neighborhood in Paris. The Opera Garnier is now used mostly for ballet and modern dance. There's also a museum with impressive displays of costumes, drawings, and set models.
