"Ile de la Cite" island is considered the heart of Paris. It has been inhabited since the 3rd century BC. The beauty of the landscape attracts many of the most famous French kings to live here. The Notre-Dame is the most famous of all cathedrals. The gothic masterpiece was started by Bishop Maurice de Sully in 1163. The Cathedral was to be built in the new gothic style and had to reflect Paris's status as the capital of the Kingdom France. Notre-Dame was finished in the 14th century. After the French revolution the church fell in oblivion. It was restored in the 19th century, after the famous novel of the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" was published in 1831. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Notre Dame de Paris) was Victor Hugo's greatest historical romance. The story revolves around a beauty-and-the-beast theme, in which the selfless love of the misshapen bell ringer Quasimodo is contrasted with the corrupt lust of the cathedral's archdeacon, Claude Frollo, for the beautiful gypsy dancer Esmeralda. |
