The Jardin des Tuileries is Paris's most central garden. The Jardin des Tuileries sits between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde. In 1559 Catherine de Medicis commissioned the construction of the palace of Tuileries close to an Italian garden. The layout of the garden underwent many changes until 1660, when Le Notre designed the current park. The Jardin des Tuileries was one of the first parks to open to the public and it quickly became a place to see and be seen. Even in the 18th century the park featured amenities such as cafes, kiosks, deck chairs and public toilets. Today Jardin des Tuileries is a place where children congregate, taking part in gardening, painting, sculpturing and modeling work groups. Other attractions include a traditional merry-go-round, donkey rides and small boats for hire. Jardin des Tuileries also features several fountains, two large basins, numerous sculptures and two museums, the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume and the Musee de l'Orangerie. Those two buildings are the only remains of the original Palais de Tuileries. |
